American Government Questions for the Citizenship Test

Review the American Government section of the official citizenship test list, from constitutional principles to civic duties.

American Government is the first subject in the official 128-question civics list. It covers questions 1 through 72 and is divided into Principles of American Government, System of Government, and Rights and Responsibilities. The organization comes directly from the USCIS study document, which also supplies acceptable answers for every prompt. Read the official 128 questions and answers.

For the 2025 civics test, USCIS says an officer may ask up to 20 oral questions from the full 128-question list. Twelve correct answers are needed to pass on the regular format. American Government is a large share of the study source, but USCIS does not publish a required number of questions from each subject at a particular interview. USCIS 2025 civics test guidance.

The three American Government topics

The topic labels are useful for separating closely related terms. Principles of American Government includes the Constitution, amendments, the Declaration of Independence, the rule of law, and checks and balances. System of Government covers Congress, the executive branch, the courts, federal and state powers, and related questions. Rights and Responsibilities includes voting, freedoms, citizenship, civic participation, taxes, and Selective Service.

Official topicQuestion numbersExamples of the subject matter
Principles of American Government1–15Constitution, amendments, founding ideas, rule of law
System of Government16–62Branches, Congress, presidency, courts, federalism
Rights and Responsibilities63–72Voting, freedoms, citizenship, civic participation

Some of these prompts have answers that change. The official list includes questions about current representatives, current officials, and state-specific facts. USCIS directs applicants to use test updates for answers that change with elections or appointments. A current check is more appropriate than preserving an officeholder name in a static note.

Use the answer alternatives as part of review

Many American Government prompts ask for one example or one power, and USCIS lists more than one acceptable response. That makes the acceptable-answer column as important as the prompt itself. The official document also marks some questions with an asterisk for the 65/20 special consideration. The USCIS PDF shows both answer alternatives and asterisks.

A subject-based review can move from constitutional concepts to institutions, then to rights and responsibilities, while retaining the official question numbers. This preserves both the category and the original source when a response needs to be checked again.

The full format is covered in the U.S. citizenship test guide. Citizenship test questions explains acceptable answers, and American history questions covers the next official subject.
